Adolf Sutro (1830-1898) public figure, entrepreneur, city Mayor (1894-96). Sutro made a fortune in Nevada’s Comstock Lode and used it to purchase thousands of acres of land in San Francisco’s out lying areas. Sutro was known to share his money for the benefit of the public including building the elaborate Sutro Baths, the Cliff House, planting Sutro forest, donating the land for UCSF, and opening up his private estate to the public.
